Local Biodiversity Assessment
The LBA delivers:
I. A flexible tool that fits in multiple ESG frameworks developed for asset & real estate management.
II. Data-driven, quantifiable ESG risk and progress tracking.
III. Innovation and differentiation to your risk management analysis.
How to understand the LBA:
The cause of indoor air pollution is a combinatory effect of physical, chemical, and biological factors and the adequacy of ventilation in the environment. There is a correlation between the concentrations of the pollutants and the onset of health problems, predominantly respiratory symptoms such as a higher prevalence of respiratory diseases like asthma and allergies.
Microbial biodiversity is the key element to maintaining healthy and good-quality air as microorganisms degrade pollutants. But the interaction occurs in both ways. The air quality also affects the microbial communities. The more polluted air (high PM2.5-PM10 level) the more pathogenic bacteria are found.
Effect of air pollution on the total bacteria and pathogenic bacteria in different sizes of particulate matter
Human health and well-being depend on daily exposure to biodiversity. The assessment of the local biodiversity potential is a significant step to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state in the given location to decide what measures to take to minimize the negative impact of the outdoors on the indoor climate.
Parameters measured in the assessment
Real-time time monitoring of the indoor air quality
Three standard locations measure a wide range of Air quality sensors such as PM1; PM2.5; PM10; CO2; Humidity; VOC
Indoor microbial mapping
Determination of the potential sources of microbial contamination of the indoor air according to the NEN-EN 13098:2019 and working procedure ISO 17025.
Analysis of microbial biodiversity of the indoor air
The collected air samples are further processed with DNA & RNA extraction, Next Generation Sequencing, taxonomic assignment and a pattern and correlation analysis.
Data mining biodiversity.
Databases are searched for information about the types and sources of negative and positive air quality impacts on the building. Such as vegetation mapping, Air quality index (AQI), pollution data and biological value areas.
Client case: Group Van Vooren
Expert in environmental services
9060 Zelzate
The determination of the air quality and local biodiversity of GVV HQ shows an immense opportunity to mitigate the heavily polluted area and limited exposure to Biodiversity.
Continuously monitoring and periodic measurements of the built environment can now evaluate the real impact it endures, and which solutions mitigate the negative effects.
"Along one side of our company HQ, we sit on the Monastery Forest. On the other side, you have this huge industrial zone. We wanted to know the true impact of the good and the bad on our built environment. And how to change it for the better.
The LBA is a multifaceted tool.
In today's labour market, where you have to remain ever-competitive as an employer, Group Van Vooren is looking for new ways to create an attractive and thriving workplace. With the LBA they present a long-term strategy to deliver a meaningful change.
